Disadvantages of Dental Braces.

Dental braces are also called orthodontic braces. They help to align and straighten an arbitrary denture. Most often kids or teenagers are treated with braces but adults too can have them fixed to get a perfect set of teeth. Under bites, overbites, crooked teeth and malocclusions are corrected  using dental braces.

The application of braces makes the teeth move due to force and pressure on teeth. Thus, the pressure is so made, that the teeth moves in the right direction or as needed. The traditional wire or metal braces make use of four different materials namely; brackets, bonding material, ligature elastic and arch wire.

Braces to be worn on teeth have several disadvantages. The disadvantages are as follows:

  • It takes longer for braces to straighten teeth, especially in adults. The average man must wear his braces for a period of two to three years. Moreover, there is a significant chance of a relapse in the alignment of the teeth.
  • For braces to work, one must give up some of their best meals. Corn on the cob, raw carrots, pretzels, nuts, and pop corn are hard solid foods that can cause damage to the wiring of the braces. Individuals with braces must avoid sticky food such as gum, caramel or taffy.
  • Braces may cause speech defects. One may develop a slight, temporary lisp as a result of the braces. This is especially true if the dentist installs a palatial expander in conjunction with your braces.
  • Maintaining your dental health involves monthly visits to the orthodontist, along with your regular dental checkups. The orthodontist may have to readjust your braces. Depending on the level of adjustment, a patient should expect a day or two of pain and discomfort.
  • When it comes to braces, personal maintenance can be difficult, especially when it comes to flossing. The thread can tangle itself into the wire brackets, and can be hard to remove.
  • When you start wearing braces, you will have to wear a mouth guard during activity. While mouth guards are advisable anyway when playing sports, one should be careful to wear them during any high level of activity while wearing braces. Any hit in the mouth could damage the braces, as well as the teeth and the wire is vulnerable to bending or breaking.
