Gum disease is a condition whereby the gums and the bone surrounding the teeth become infected and get inflamed. Gum disease is caused by bacteria around the teeth. These bacteria stick on the tooth surface. They are called plaque. The signs of gum disease include redness, swelling, halitosis or bad breathe a receding gum line, loose teeth and bleeding during brushing or flossing. Below are some of the natural remedies that can be used to treat gum disease.
- Vitamin C. There is a great relationship between vitamin C deficiency and gum disease. A low intake of vitamin C encourages periodontal disease. This vitamin is an antioxidant which is useful in repairing connective tissue and it also accelerates bone regeneration. Vitamin C is available in fruits and it can also be taken as a supplement. Chewable supplements are not advised because they encourage acidity in the mouth and aid in the promotion of erosion of the enamel of the tooth.
- Vitamin D. it has been discovered that vitamin D has anti- inflammatory effects thus it reduces the onset of gum disease. There is also a discovery that people who have high blood levels of vitamin D are unlikely to experience bleeding gums. Sources of vitamin D include at least 20 minutes exposure to the sun.
- Reduction of stress. Too much stress contributes greatly to an increase in plaque accumulation. All the students had their teeth professionally cleaned a few weeks before they had their exams and then a few weeks after their exams. It was discovered that they had high rates of plaque and gingivitis after exams compared to a group of students who were used as a control experiment who did not write exams.
- Co-enzyme Q 10. Gum disease has been linked to lower levels of co-enzyme q10. This is an antioxidant that occurs naturally in the body. It is mostly found in foods and it is also available in supplement form. Co-enzyme q10 is very essential in repairing gum tissues.
- Good oral hygiene. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is maintained by removal of plaque that irritates the gum by brushing and flossing the teeth twice daily. These natural remedies are effective but they should not take over dental treatments.
